Akbar (1556 - 1605 AD)

Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar was the sone of Humayun and Hamida Banu Begum. Akbar was crowned as the emperor of India at the age of 13 on February 14, 1556, at Kalanaur. His tutor and guardian Bairam Khan was the regent.

The battle between Akabar and Hemu (Hemu otherwise known as Raja Vikram Singh) in the second battle of Panipat in 1556 (5th November 1556) and the Sur forces under Hemu was defeated.

In the battle of Haldighat (June 18 1576), Akbar defeated Rana Pratap Singh of Mewar. The Mughal army was led by Man Singh of Amber.

Akbar introduced the Mansabdari system for revenue administration. Every officer was given a mansab or a rank. Raja Todarmal was the revenue minister of Akbar.

A new regilion founded by Akbar is 'Din-Ilahi'. To conduct religious discussions, he built a hall, Ibadatkhana.

Akbar is considered as a national ruler due to his secular approach.

Jaziya (tax) and the Pilgrimage taxes were abolished by Akbar in 1564.

He built his capital at Fatehpur Sikri, near Agra. The most important fort built by him ws the Agra Fort. The Buland Darwaza or lofty gate was built by him to comemmorate his victory over Gujarat. Humayun's tomb at Delhi was built by him.

The historian of Akbar was Sheik Abul Fazal. He wrote Akbar Nama (1596) and the Ain-I-Akbari (1602).

The court Singer of Akbar was Main Tansen. His real name was Rama Thanu Pande.

Birbal, the court jester, Tulsi Das, a Hindi Poet and Badauni, famous historian also lived in the court of Akbar.

Jaswant and Dasawn, two famous painters lived in Akbar's court.

The court lawyer of Akbar was Birbal.

The first Englishman to visit Akbar's court Ralph Fitch in 1585.

Akbar's tomb is at Sikandra
