Shah Jahan (1628 - 1658)

Prince Khuram ascended the Mughal throne as Shah Jahan in 1628.

In 1612, he married Arjumand Banu Begum. Later she became famous as Mumtaz Mahal which means beloved of the palace.

To perpetuate the memory of his wife (Mumtaj Mahal died in 1631), he built the Taj Mahal in Agra in 1632 - 53).  

Shah Jahan is known as the 'Prince of Builders'.

His period is considered as the Golden Age of Mughal architecture.

In 1656, Shahjahan constructed the Juma Masjid in Delhi. It is the biggest Masjid in India.

Taj Mahal at Agra, Red Fort at Delhi, Moti Masjid at Agra built out of white marble and Jama Masjid at Delhi built in red sandstone are his constructions.

He was imprisoned (till his death in 1666) by hi son Aurangzeb.
