The Period of Delhi Sultanate

The slave dynasty(1206-1290 AD)

Founder-Qutubudin Aibak(1206-1210 AD) He was popularly called ‘Lakh bhaksh(giver of Lakhs). Aibak laid the foundation for the 72.5 m high Qutub Minar in Delhi in memory of the Sufi Saint Sutubbuddin Bhaktiyar. It was completed by his successor and son-in-law Iltumish.

He constructed two mosques-Quwat-Ul-Islamat at Delhi and Adhai din ka Jhopra at Ajmer.

Shamsuddin Iltumish(1211-236 AD)


  • Iltumish is considered as the real founder of Delhi Sultanate. The Mongolian invader Chengiz Khan attacked India during his time.
  • ‘Silver Tanka’and ‘Copper Jital’ the two basic coins of the Sultanate Period were introduced by Iltumish.
  • He completed the construction of Qutub Minar.
  • He organized the ‘Chalisa’ or the famous Turkish forty to help him in the asministration.
  • He introduced the revenue system called “Iqta system”.


Razia Sultana (1236-1240 AD)


  • She was the daughter of Iltumish. She is the first,last and the only Musli woman ruler of Delhi Sultanate.
  • Balban was the most important ruler of Slave dynasty.
  • Balban is considered as the founder of second Ilbari dynasty.
  • He described himself as ‘Shadow of God’ or the ‘Vice regent of God on Earth’.


Khilji dynasty (1290-1320 AD)

The slave dynasty was followed by Khilji dynasty.
founder-Jalaludin Khilji.

Alauddin Khilji(1296-1316 AD)


  • Alauddin was the nephew of Jalaluddin. He killed his own uncle and became the Sultan of Delhi. He is the most renowned of the Khilji rulers.
  • His general Malik Kahafur captured the kingdoms of Kakatiyas of Warrangal(Andhra Pradesh), Hoysalas of Dwarasamudra (Karnataka), Madurai and Malabar.
  • Alauddin is known for his famous reforms in Market Regulations.
  • Amir Khusrau was the court poet of Alauddin.
  • Malik Kafur was his commander who attacked South India.
  • He abolished the Zamindari system and imposed tax on cattle.
